Hovis off to strong start in minor leagues
Jonathan Hovis wasn't drafted by any major-league team in June, but after a stellar performance for North Carolina in the College World Series, he signed a pro contract with the New York Yankees on July 1. Now, Hovis, a relief pitcher, is throwing for the Staten Island (N.Y.) Yankees, the team's rookie-league affiliate. Hovis hasn't allowed an earned run in his first four innings and has four strikeouts. (Charlotte Observer)
