'Mouth of the South' was a memorable character in life
He was Bill Currie. He was something else. He was the “Mouth of the South,” the radio voice of University of North Carolina basketball and football from 1962 to 1971, and one of the more colorful characters of all time. “I wish to God I had never left,” he told me in 1990 about leaving UNC to become a color commentator with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers. “I had the best job in the world."
