UNC's reliance on the somewhat unorthodox 1-3-1 was born during a variety of coach-to-coach conversations between Hatchell and some of the best minds in the game. As Roy Williams often says, the best coaches are often the ones most willing to incorporate other ideas from other coaches, and Hatchell liked the zone principles she learned from Hubie Brown, Jerry Green, and Howard West.
