UNC led 39-37 when Wood went on what coach Dean Smith later called a "virtuoso performance," an offensive rampage rarely equaled in NCAA Tournament annals. Perkins and Worthy were sufficiently dangerous inside that Sampson couldn't roam too far. Wood began to find holes in the Virginia defense, which he exploited with an assortment of mid-range, pull-up jumpers -- one after another after another. (ACC Sports Journal)
