A tale of love, hate -- and ACC hoops rivalry

Will Blythe, a 1979 UNC Chapel Hill graduate and former literary editor at Esquire, decided to discover how his happiness had become so tied to a basketball team. He would chart North Carolina's "fabled collective obsession." He would study hatred -- and make it "a labor of love." He settled on the title -- "To Hate Like This Is To Be Happy Forever" -- while he wrote his book proposal. The subtitle -- "A Thoroughly Obsessive, Intermittently Uplifting, and Occasionally Unbiased Account of the Duke-North Carolina Basketball Rivalry" -- came about later. (Charlotte Observer)
