Like in any great rivalry, the players understand how important the game are. Former Tar Heels center Brendan Haywood remarked, “I don't want to share the ACC title with anybody — especially Duke.” And with former Kansas coach Roy Williams — a Tar Heel graduate and former assistant — taking over UNC before the 2003-04 season, the series took on a renewed vigor with Carolina’s national resurgence.
