Williams' long-ago decision set career path


It seemed like a no-brainer at the time, leaving a small high school job to fulfill your dream of becoming a college basketball coach, working with one of the game's legends at your alma mater. But for , it was a difficult decision to leave Owen High in 1978 — the same kind of agonizing choice that would be played out so publicly later in his career on two occasions when he once again pondered a job offer from the University of North Carolina.
