UNC athletic department struggles to make profit

North Carolina’s athletic program contains 28 varsity programs and more than 867 varsity athletes, supported by more than $70 million of annual revenue. More than half of that revenue comes from football and men’s basketball. In the past four years, UNC either won the NCAA title or finished as the runner-up seven times — in field hockey twice, women’s soccer three times, women’s lacrosse and men’s basketball.
