UNC's problems have roots in national trend toward, bigger, fancier, richer

Fancy stadiums and audience elites don’t break the rules, but William Friday sees UNC’s current problems as a manifestation of the national commercial trend most evident in television’s power over college sports. He sensed that the Knight Commission had a grip on financial issues until 1995, when money gushed into the system, the facilities arms race accelerated and conferences started expanding to chase more millions.
