Oversigning controversy: Early enrollment lets schools get around NCAA limits

College football coaches have embraced early enrollment for signees because it allows the new players to take part in spring drills and get a head start with conditioning and academics. But there's another reason early enrollment is all the rage -- it's a way around NCAA limitations on oversigning. UNC coach said grayshirting can benefit some players, however, by delaying the start of the 5-year clock on their eligibility. "There have been years as a head football coach that I've oversigned a few players, but we've always been up front and honest and told the player, 'Here's why we think this is a good idea for you,'" Davis said.
