UNC Weekly Recruiting Recap: Basketball
UNC basketball recruiting recap for the week ending April 22, 2012.
-Incoming freshman point guard
Marcus Paige was
named 2nd team All-America by ESPN.
-Tar Heel Blog offered an excellent overview of
UNC's scholarship numbers for next season given the recent NBA departures and incoming freshmen.
-2014 point guard
Joel Berry from Lake Highland Prep in Orlando, FL has emerged on UNC's recruiting radar. Berry led his team to the state championship game last season and became the first sophomore ever to be named Mr. Basketball in the state of Florida.
UNC assistant coach
C.B. McGrath watched Berry work out at his high school last week, and
Roy Williams took in his game Friday night at the Nike EYBL in Minneapolis, MN.
-Other players who also appear to be on UNC's recruiting radar include
Wayne Selden,
BeeJay Anya,
Marcus Derrickson, and
Noah Vonleh. Each were evaluated at their high schools by UNC coaches last week according to multiple twitter reports.
-
Noah Vonleh (2014 SF) has a
new highlight video on YouTube, and it's easy to see why UNC is extremely interested.
-2013 SF
Troy Williams has
cut his list down to two schools: UNC and Kentucky.
-Charlotte's
Kennedy Meeks is also still hearing from UNC.
UNC coaches contacted him on April 18th and were planning to watch him at the EYBL event over the weekend.
-Speaking of AAU events, CBSSports.com has posted an excellent
comprehensive schedule of all AAU Spring and Summer dates.
-UNC commits
Nate Britt and
Joel James will join UNC targets
Troy Williams and
Julius Randle at the
U.S. Under-18 National Training Camp June 5-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
-2013 UNC power forward commit
Isaiah Hicks was
expected to be a top storyline in the Las Vegas AAU event this weekend.
Roy Williams was in Vegas on Saturday watching Hicks and
Noah Vonleh.
-And while Williams was evaluating Hicks and Vonleh, UNC assistant
Steve Robinson spent some time evaluating 2014 SF
Jalen Lindsey.
-South Carolina transfer forward Anthony Gill is
no longer considering UNC and appears to be leaning towards Virginia.
-The web site Keeping It Heel has posted an
interview with 2012 UNC commit Joel James.
-Finally, if you're interested in tracking freshmen from the 2015 class, 6'6" forward
Brandon Ingram from Kinston, NC
may be a name to keep an eye on.
That's it for this week. Please feel free to send us your feedback or questions for next week's recap. We'd like to make this a regular feature if the response is positive.
