With an eighth seed, Carolina was supposed to have a struggle with ninth-seeded Southwest Missouri State, and then was supposed to be fodder for top-seeded and top-ranked Oklahoma. Under the direction of Billy Tubbs, the Sooners were a high-octane scoring machine; they had won at least 30 games for two seasons in a row and were the national runner-up to Kansas in 1988.
