When the Tar Heels went out for opening warm-ups on Thursday night at Wallace Wade Stadium wearing black helmets, the equipment staff pulled out the chrome lids and had them waiting. The players made the switch just before the kickoff and a sublime confluence of energy, focus, resolve, preparation, scheming and a roster of players maturing as the season wore on resulted in that fast start.
