The nadir of Tar Heel football’s plunge to scorn and indignation came in Charlottesville in mid-October 2006. As Virginia thumped Carolina 22-0 that Thursday night, the Heels were hit with derision from the Cavalier fans (they got bored and left early); from the national media (ESPN’s crew giggled at the Heels’ futility); and from the Virginia print media (“The Tar Heels’ defense gives porous a bad name,” noted one wag).
