40 years later, Small-Toney recognized for breaking UNC athletics’ last color barrier

Last month in an emotional ceremony at Carmichael Arena, Rochelle Small-Toney was honored alongside other black pioneers during a Tar Heel women’s basketball game. It was the first time she had been so publicly recognized for her feat since breaking the team’s color barrier 40 years ago. “It was just a wonderful reception. This was very special.”
