December 11, 1789: The General Assembly Chartered UNC

On December 11, 1789, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill chartering a state-supported university. A site in rural Orange County was selected for the university in late 1792. A group of Orange County farmers previously had donated funds and a parcel of 1,290 acres atop New Hope Chapel Hill, an area named for a chapel that stood there.
