The Carolina Hurricanes became the first team from North Carolina to win a major professional sports title by capturing the Stanley Cup. Here’s our list of the state’s 10 other greatest sports moments: 1. 1982 UNC national title, 6. 1957 UNC national championship, 9. 2005 UNC national championship. Honorable Mention: UNC's string of 12 national championships in women's soccer over a 13-year span, UNC's Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice is the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1948 and 1949.
