UNC alumnus passed up chance to play abroad to build soccer game at home

Eddie Pope looks with pride at the younger players surrounding him on the U.S. World Cup soccer team. Muscular defender Oguchi Onyewu, speedy forward Landon Donovan and creative midfielder Bobby Convey are in their mid-20s and among the team's headliners. They have the potential to make the United States a serious international contender before their careers are over. Pope is a former North Carolina player who grew up in High Point, one of six on the U.S. roster who played college soccer in the Carolinas. (Charlotte Observer)
