The similarities in the searches by UNC and N.C. State extend beyond their protracted nature. Both schools went after big names first. For the Wolfpack, that meant taking a run at Texas coach Rick Barnes and Memphis mentor John Calipari, with a query along the way to Kentucky's Tubby Smith, a perennial target of those with overblown assessments of their standing in the basketball community.
