Dexter Lawrence commits to Clemson

Clemson landed its highest-rated prospect for the 2016 class Monday afternoon in five-star Wake Forest (N.C.) defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. Lawrence announced the decision at his high school, picking the Tigers over hometown NC State, Alabama and more top programs. He visited NC State as recently as last weekend. Logan Byrd ready to start college career at North Carolina

UNC quarterback commit Logan Byrd had a signing ceremony Thursday in the school cafeteria on his next-to-last-day of class at Veterans, beginning a whirlwind month that will take him from Houston County to Los Angeles to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. "It's crazy," Byrd said. "The rest of my friends are going to still be in high school and I'll be seven hours away doing my own thing." (Macon Telegraph)

Linebacker Jonathan Smith signs LOI to UNC

Senior linebacker Jonathan Smith announced his pledge to the UNC in August before Scotland’s first regular season game, but left the door to his commitment slightly ajar in case he experienced second thoughts. The 6-1, 230-pounder slammed that door shut Wednesday during a signing ceremony at Scotland Motors in Laurinburg, inking his National Letter of Intent to join the Tar Heels. (Laurinburg Exchange)

Chazz Surratt a finalist for Parade national player of year

East Lincoln quarterback Chazz Surratt is among 10 finalists for the Parade Magazine All-America team national player of the year. Surratt has 16,593 career offensive yards, breaking the 13-year-old record of 16,590 set by former Independence quarterback Chris Leak. Surratt ends his career with 10,770 passing yards and 136 touchdowns. (Charlotte Observer)

WR Rontavius Groves commits to North Carolina

Speedy class of 2016 wide receiver Rontavius Groves (Nashville, TN/Pearl Cohn) committed to the Tar Heels on Saturday. A 5-11, 175-pound recruit, Groves is being targeted by UNC for the A-Back position, similar to what Ryan Switzer now plays for the Tar Heels. "I decided to choose UNC because I'd have a great possibility at starting very early," Groves said. (247 Sports)

Myles Dorn had a unique idea for his commitment announcement on Friday. Dorn and his family set up on the Vance High School gymnasium floor at halftime of the basketball game and right before he was about to state his choice, he stopped. DB Recruit Myles Dorn Commits to UNC

Myles Dorn will follow in his father’s footsteps after all. During halftime of Vance High’s basketball game on Friday, Dorn told the crowd that he would continue his football career at North Carolina – just as his father did three decades earlier. JuCo LB J.B. Copeland's UNC Commitment Pending

J.B. Copeland announced on Twitter on Thursday morning that he had committed to North Carolina moments after speaking with UNC assistant coach John "J.P." Papuchis, though one hurdle remains before making it official. "They offered me two or three days ago officially and I have an official visit Dec. 11," said the 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker at Navarro College. (Inside Carolina)

Chazz Surratt named N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year

Tar Heel quarterback commit Chazz Surratt has been named the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year. Surratt, a 6-3, 215-pound signal-caller, pledged to UNC on June 26th after flipping his commitment from Duke. A basketball standout as well, Surratt plans to walk-on with Roy Williams' Tar Heels while at UNC. He has maintained a 4.75 weighted GPA during his high school career. (Carolina Blue)

Chazz Surratt reflects on record-setting career

East Lincoln quarterback Chazz Surratt began his high school career as a receiver with 123 receiving yards and a touchdown on Aug. 17, 2012. The Mustangs went 16-0 that season en route to their first state title in school history. In between that game and his last, Surratt accumulated 16,593 total yards and accounted for 229 total touchdowns, both of which now stand as state records. (Lincoln Times-News)

Weekend UNC Football Recruit Scoreboard

UNC RB commit Jordon Brown turned an 83-yard reception into a touchdown and rushed for another TD. He carried the ball a dozen times for 45 yards. East Lincoln QB Chazz Surratt won’t have surgery on injured elbow

East Lincoln High senior quarterback Chazz Surratt, who set a North Carolina record for total offense Friday, won’t need surgery on his injured left elbow, his mother told the Observer Tuesday. Brandi Surratt said doctors at UNC, where her son has committed to play football, told the family surgery isn’t needed. He will wear a hinged brace for a week and then begin rehab.
