After 39 years with UNC, head gymnastics coach Derek Galvin prepares for retirement

When Derek Galvin took over as head coach of the North Carolina gymnastics program in 1981, Ronald Reagan was president of the United States, MTV had just gone on the air and Michael Jordan was still a first-year at UNC. Derek Galvin Retires After 39 Years As UNC Gymnastics Head Coach

Derek Galvin, head coach of the UNC gymnastics team for the past 39 years, is retiring at the end of June. Associate head coach Marie Case Denick will serve as interim coach until Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham names a permanent head coach. Seventeen Tar Heel Teams Exceed National APR Average

Seventeen UNC varsity athletics teams exceeded the national average for the past four years in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rates and 13 squads posted perfect 1000s in 2018-19. UNC Recognizes Top 10 Scholar-Athlete Award Winners

Ten UNC student-athletes have been honored as this year's Top 10 Scholar-Athletes, recognizing seniors who have maintained the highest cumulative grade point averages as a member of a varsity team. Elizabeth Culton Named EAGL Rookie Gymnast Of The Year

UNC Freshman Elizabeth Culton was named 2020 East Atlantic Gymnastic League Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, March 31 for her performances in competitions throughout the season. UNC Gymnast Khazia Hislop Named WCGA Second Team All-American

North Carolina's Khazia Hislop, a senior from Concord, Massachusetts, was named a second team All-American for the 2020 season, the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association announced Tuesday. This honor marks Hislop's third All-America accolade. In 2018 and 2019, the WCGA recognized Hislop as a second team All-American on floor exercise. (GoHeels.com)

UNC celebrates eighth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day

It was a day of celebrating women's sports at North Carolina, as 15 varsity teams representing 36 national championships greeted over 1,200 visitors for UNC's eighth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
