During his final two years at Illinois, 1988-90, Jim Phillips toiled as a student assistant in the athletics department and a basketball team manager, experience that included the Illini’s run to the 1989 Final Four. His time at Illinois hooked Phillips on college athletics, commencing a professional journey that today finds him as Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner.
