North Carolina pioneer, UNC alumna Betty McCain remembered for lifetime of service

Political powerhouse Betty Ray McCain died Wednesday at 91, leaving behind a legacy of service to her state. McCain was the first woman to chair the UNC Board of Governors’ finance committee, the first on the state’s Advisory Budget Commission and the first to chair the state Democratic Party. She was secretary of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.
