Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire could anger or disappoint us without engendering an emotional toll on our psyches. Whether you considered either a hero or just another overpaid professional athlete, the fact is Chapel Hill is a long way from California. They are figures of SportsCenter or CNN, images from the evening news and the morning headlines. They are real, but distant enough to brush aside as we would any other bothersome thought. Marion Jones is different.
