News Release:Former Carolina Basketball Players Help Alumni Raise Scholarship Funds
RALEIGH – The familiar question “What binds us to this place?” was asked of Carolina alumni by fellow Tar Heel Charles Kuralt. Alumni living in
Wake County answer that question very simply — love for the University and its students, and love of Carolina basketball.
As the University celebrates 100 years of Carolina basketball, area alumni are using this special anniversary to combine these two loves to raise
scholarship funds for Wake County students attending Carolina.
Carolina alumni living in Raleigh and surrounding areas will gather for the third annual Old Well Celebration at the North Carolina Museum of
Natural Sciences on Thursday, Feb. 11. Cocktails and a silent auction, including autographed UNC memorabilia, will begin at 6:30 p.m. A panel
discussion on "Carolina Basketball Through the Years" moderated by Woody Durham will include former Carolina players Lennie Rosenbluth,
Rusty Clark, Bill Chamberlain, Surry Wood and Eric Montross.
Wake County Carolina Club chair Danita Morgan says, "The Old Well Celebration gives us one night where we can celebrate our university and
raise scholarship funds. In today’s economic climate, financial aid for higher education is needed more than ever. Wake County Carolina alumni
want to be proactive in helping to meet that need."
The Old Well Celebration is the marquis fundraising event for local club scholarships. Wake County is home to the greatest concentration of
Carolina alumni, with more than 25,000 former Tar Heel students. So it’s no surprise that the Old Well Celebration quickly rose to the top of the
rankings in its efforts to raise scholarship funds. Past events have raised $12,000 annually, which has been awarded to students by the Office of
Scholarships and Financial Aid in $3,000 scholarships.
The Wake County Carolina Club is sponsored by the UNC General Alumni Association which supports approximately 100 alumni clubs around the globe to
encourage fellowship among alumni and alumni involvement with the University. The Wake County Club hosts numerous events throughout the year,
including basketball game viewing parties at Hi5 on Glenwood Avenue. Even at these events, Tar Heels embrace the spirit of giving back by including
activities that help raise funds for local students, once again rekindling two great loves — University and basketball.
Carolina alumni living in Raleigh and surrounding areas can register for the Old Well Celebration at
alumni.unc.edu/clubs/wakecounty/oldwell/. Registration is $65/person;
$50/person for alumni from class years 1999-2009. General Alumni Association members receive a $15 discount.
