Tar Heels hope Michael Russell can return for baseball opener Friday

Heading into the NCAA Tournament, North Carolina’s pitching rotation is set but its lineup is far from certain. UNC coach Mike Fox said ace Trent Thornton will start when the Tar Heels open play Friday in the Gainesville Regional against Long Beach State (1 p.m., ESPN3.com), while top hitter Michael Russell remains day-to-day with a sore back.
