On the night of October 1 last season, the Yankees were facing a must-win game against the Boston Red Sox. It was a warm, if breezy evening in the Bronx. The season wasn't over if they lost. But doing so would have put their Wild Card playoff chances in more jeopardy than they already were, their fate relying more and more on the outcomes of other teams.
