Charlotte Smith, who studied alongside
Sylvia Hatchell and Andrew Calder for nine years as a UNC assistant coach before taking the Elon job in 2011. As a laser-focused athlete who poured her energy into a 10-year pro career, Smith never had considered coaching when Hatchell offered her a staff position in 2000.
