Former Tar Heel great Bob McAdoo was awarded the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, averaging 34.5 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks per game for the Buffalo Braves, while shooting 51 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line.

Senior captain Jawad Williams scores 20 points and the Tar Heels hold Michigan State to 29 percent shooting from the floor in the second half in an 87-71 UNC win in the national semifinals.

Brice Johnson sets UNC's single-season rebounding record at 408 with the Tar Heels' 83-66 Final Four win over Syracuse in the national semifinals. Roy Williams becomes only the fifth coach in NCAA history to take his team to the championship game five times.

The Tar Heels defeat Gonzaga, 71-65, to win UNC's 6th NCAA Championship and coach Roy Williams' 3rd national title behind Final Four Most Outstanding Player Joel Berry's 22 points in Glendale, Arizona.

Marvin Williams tips in the game-winner with 1:17 to play, Final Four MVP Sean May has a game-high 26 points and Raymond Felton makes key plays down the stretch as No. 2 Carolina beats No. 1 Illinois, 75-70, to win UNC’s fourth NCAA title and the first for Coach Roy Williams.

Final Four MVP Donald Williams score 25 points for the second Final Four game in a row, Eric Montross scores 16 and George Lynch posts his fourth straight double-double as Carolina avenges earlier loss to Michigan with 77-71 victory. The win gives Dean Smith his second NCAA championship. Williams hits 5 of 7 three-pointers in both Final Four games, including a 78-68 win over Roy Williams-led Kansas in the semifinal.

Final Four MVP Wayne Ellington scores 17 of his 19 points in the first half, Ty Lawson has a game-high 21 points and sets a Final Four record with eight steals, and Tyler Hansbrough scores 18 points to cap his brilliant career as the Tar Heels beat Michigan State, 89-72, in Detroit to win the national championship. Ellington sets a Final Four record by making 8 of 10 three-pointers in the two games. Carolina leads the Spartans, 55-34, at the half, setting championship game records for most points in a first half and largest lead at the break.

April 14, 1798
The cornerstone of UNC's South Building was laid on April 14, 1798. However, construction on what is now the University's central administration building was not completed until 1814. University President Joseph Caldwell toured the state by buggy to seek funds for completing the building.

Legendary Chapel Hill landmark Sutton's Drugstore was founded on April 18, 1923. Two former UNC students, James Linwood Sutton and his brother-in-law, J. L. Alderman, rented the space formerly occupied by Jack Sparrow's Smokeshop located in a two-story brick building on East Franklin Street.

UNC beats Boston College in both games of a double header, 8-7 and 11-10. This was the first time in UNC Baseball history that both games of a double header have gone to extra innings. Both teams combined to play 10 hours, use 24 pitchers, score 36 runs, leave 49 runners on base and throw almost 1,000 pitches.

Brianna Duncan sets the UNC women's 100-meter dash record with a time of 11.27 seconds at the Virginia Grand Prix, breaking Marion Jones' 1994 record of 11.40.

UNC women's tennis coach Brian Kalbas secures his 600th career coaching victory and the Tar Heels win their third consecutive ACC Championship by defeating top seeded Duke, 4-2, on April 29, 2018.
April 30, 2017
UNC athletics wins 3 ACC Tournaments on the same day as the Tar Heels' men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and women's tennis teams all claim conference championships. The No. 4 UNC baseball team also sweeps the No. 3 Clemson Tigers in a 3-game series in Chapel Hill to cap a great weekend.
