Forward Deon Thompson plays in his NCAA record-setting 152nd career game as the Tar Heels fall to Dayton, 79-68, in Madison Square Garden in the NIT championship game.

April 1, 2021
Hall of Fame UNC Basketball coach Roy Williams announces his retirement after 18 seasons at his alma mater, 3 national titles, and 48 seasons as a basketball coach. Williams ends his career third all-time in wins by a Division I head coach with 903 and the only coach in history with 400 wins at two schools (UNC, Kansas).

April 2, 1975
Former Tar Heel great Bob McAdoo was awarded the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, averaging 34.5 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks per game for the Buffalo Braves, while shooting 51 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line.

April 2, 2005
Senior captain Jawad Williams scores 20 points and the Tar Heels hold Michigan State to 29 percent shooting from the floor in the second half in an 87-71 UNC win in the national semifinals.

April 2, 2016
Brice Johnson sets UNC's single-season rebounding record at 408 with the Tar Heels' 83-66 Final Four win over Syracuse in the national semifinals. Roy Williams becomes only the fifth coach in NCAA history to take his team to the championship game five times.

April 2, 2022
First-year head coach Hubert Davis and the No. 8 seed Tar Heels beat No. 2 seed Duke 81-77 in the NCAA Tournament semifinals at the Final Four in the New Orleans Superdome. The victory propels UNC to the national championship game against Kansas and ends Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski's coaching career.

April 3, 1994
The UNC women's basketball team defeated Louisiana Tech 60-59 at the Richmond (VA) Coliseum to win the 1994 NCAA Tournament on a 3 point shot by Charlotte Smith as time expired. The ball was inbounded with only 0.7 seconds left on the clock, making it one of the most exciting finishes in tournament history. It was Hall of Fame coach Sylvia Hatchell's first national championship and the first year that the NCAA women's tournament included 64 teams.

April 3, 2017
The Tar Heels defeat Gonzaga, 71-65, to win UNC's 6th NCAA Championship and coach Roy Williams' 3rd national title behind Final Four Most Outstanding Player Joel Berry's 22 points in Glendale, Arizona.

April 4, 2005
Marvin Williams tips in the game-winner with 1:17 to play, Final Four MVP Sean May has a game-high 26 points and Raymond Felton makes key plays down the stretch as No. 2 Carolina beats No. 1 Illinois, 75-70, to win UNC’s fourth NCAA title and the first for Coach Roy Williams.

April 5, 1993
Final Four MVP Donald Williams score 25 points for the second Final Four game in a row, Eric Montross scores 16 and George Lynch posts his fourth straight double-double as Carolina avenges earlier loss to Michigan with 77-71 victory. The win gives Dean Smith his second NCAA championship. Williams hits 5 of 7 three-pointers in both Final Four games, including a 78-68 win over Roy Williams-led Kansas in the semifinal.

April 6, 2009
Final Four MVP Wayne Ellington scores 17 of his 19 points in the first half, Ty Lawson has a game-high 21 points and sets a Final Four record with eight steals, and Tyler Hansbrough scores 18 points to cap his brilliant career as the Tar Heels beat Michigan State, 89-72, in Detroit to win the national championship. Ellington sets a Final Four record by making 8 of 10 three-pointers in the two games. Carolina leads the Spartans, 55-34, at the half, setting championship game records for most points in a first half and largest lead at the break.

April 12, 1986
Music legend Kenny Rogers headlines the first concert ever held at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill on April 12, 1986.

April 14, 1798
The cornerstone of UNC's South Building was laid on April 14, 1798. However, construction on what is now the University's central administration building was not completed until 1814. University President Joseph Caldwell toured the state by buggy to seek funds for completing the building.

Former Kansas basketball coach Roy Williams is announced as UNC's new head coach following the resignation of Matt Doherty

April 16, 2003
Michael Jordan retires for a third, and final, time on April 16, 2003, with one of the most impressive resumes in NBA history - six-time NBA champion, six-time NBA Finals MVP, five-time NBA MVP, 14-time All-Star, 10-time scoring champ and two-time Olympic gold medalist.

April 18, 1923
Legendary Chapel Hill landmark Sutton's Drugstore was founded on April 18, 1923. Two former UNC students, James Linwood Sutton and his brother-in-law, J. L. Alderman, rented the space formerly occupied by Jack Sparrow's Smokeshop located in a two-story brick building on East Franklin Street.

April 20, 2019
UNC beats Boston College in both games of a double header, 8-7 and 11-10. This was the first time in UNC Baseball history that both games of a double header have gone to extra innings. Both teams combined to play 10 hours, use 24 pitchers, score 36 runs, leave 49 runners on base and throw almost 1,000 pitches.

April 21, 1973
UNC Track & Field's Reggie McAfee becomes the first African-American to run a sub-four-minute mile, clocking 3:59.3 at the Big Four Meet in Raleigh, NC on April 21, 1973.

April 22, 2017
UNC women's tennis All-American Hayley Carter registers the 162nd singles victory of her career. The win gives her sole possession of the ACC record for most career singles victories.

April 27, 2017
North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubusky is selected No. 2 overall by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

April 28, 2018
Brianna Duncan sets the UNC women's 100-meter dash record with a time of 11.27 seconds at the Virginia Grand Prix, breaking Marion Jones' 1994 record of 11.40.

April 29, 2018
UNC women's tennis coach Brian Kalbas secures his 600th career coaching victory and the Tar Heels win their third consecutive ACC Championship by defeating top seeded Duke, 4-2, on April 29, 2018.

April 30, 2017
UNC athletics wins 3 ACC Tournaments on the same day as the Tar Heels' men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and women's tennis teams all claim conference championships. The No. 4 UNC baseball team also sweeps the No. 3 Clemson Tigers in a 3-game series in Chapel Hill to cap a great weekend.
