George Welsh left a lasting impression on his players at Virginia

George Welsh coached the Cavaliers from 1982 to 2000, and he transformed a program that experienced two winning seasons in 29 years into one that won at least seven games 13 years in a row. “He had a vision for how to make Virginia competitive, he stuck to it and he succeeded,” said Al Groh, who replaced Welsh after his retirement following the 2000 season.
