Greatest former UNC athlete by state (Virginia): Lawrence Taylor

Before he was a household name, was simply a Tar Heel finding a position he was comfortable playing. At linebacker, Taylor blossomed into a unanimous first-team All-America, was named the 1980 ACC Player of the Year and to the 50-year 50 Greatest ACC Players Ever team. His 16 sacks as a senior in 1980 remain a UNC single-season record. (Tar Heel Illustrated)
