Duke Howell knew what was happening, even if his son didn’t yet realize it. It wasn’t long after Miami coach Mark Richt had pitched Sam Howell, then a senior at Sun Valley High School, that UNC football coach Mack Brown arrived to sell him on helping lead his rebuilding efforts in Chapel Hill. Only one problem: Howell was committed to Florida State.
