The Tar Heels finished strong, defeating South Carolina 24-20 in their season opener. Trailing 20-9 to start the 4th quarter, freshman quarterback Sam Howell led UNC on two touchdown drives as UNC outscored the Gamecocks 15-0 in the final quarter. Howell finished 15-of-25 for 245 yards and two touchdowns. UNC ran for 245 yards.
