Despite talent and depth concerns this season, UNC defensive coordinator Jay Bateman has turned around a Tar Heel defense that had served as the butt of far too many jokes during the Larry Fedora era. Focusing on critical plays instead of yardage statistics, the Tar Heels have been competitive in their first five games due to their defensive performance. (Inside Carolina)
