The North Carolina coaching great, who made a few Wilmington trips to see someone named Michael Jordan, passed away five years ago on this day. Dean Smith watches Jordan when the rising star played high school basketball at Laney during a 1980 game against Southern Wayne. Smith retired as college basketball’s winningest coach. It is now fifth most. (Wilmington Star News)
