UCLA, featuring perhaps the two greatest college players ever in Bill Walton and Lew Alcindor, beat Georgetown in one semifinal. North Carolina, with a lineup of seven All-Americans including Michael Jordan, edged LSU in a tight finish in the other semi, barely holding off the Tigers when the polling had officially closed.
