Dean Smith’s club made the short trip to Raleigh minus a starter. Point guard Dave Colescott injured an eye in the Duke win. Jimmy Black was a freshman on that team but Smith elected to go with senior Ged Doughton at the point. Doughton was an unlikely hero. Doughton started alongside a trio of future NBA players, Dudley Bradley, Mike O’Koren and Al Wood.
