1971 was Bill Dooley's first ACC championship team. Tough and physical, the Tar Heels reflected their coach, the "Old Trench Fighter", by playing physical defense and running the football right at opponents. UNC ran the ball 57 times per game and finished with a record of 9-3, falling to Georgia, coached by Bill Dooley's brother Vince Dooley, in the Gator Bowl.
