The 9-1-1 1948 Tar Heels - led by Charlie Justice, Len Szafaryn, and Art Weiner - beat Texas by 27 and a week later beat Georgia in Athens. They walloped LSU, held Tennessee to a touchdown, creamed Maryland, Duke, and Wake Forest, tied William & Mary, and lost to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. This is the only UNC team to reach No. 1 in the AP rankings. (Tar Heel Illustrated)
