The North Carolina football team desperately needed a win on the evening of October 9, 2004. Coming off a 2-10 season in 2003, the Tar Heels had lost two straight, blow-out losses to Louisville and Florida State, dropping to 2-3 on the season. Embattled head coach John Bunting was fighting for his job, while his team was fighting for respect and for its season.
