Improved defense lifts Heels to victory

David Wooldridge’s punt was rolling dead and time was running out on No. 23 Virginia when North Carolina receiver Mike Mason, in a moment of exuberance, booted the ball through Kenan Stadium’s East end zone. He was flagged for an illegal-kicking penalty, and the Tar Heels were forced to run one last play. Quarterback Matt Baker took a knee. No harm done.
