Award-winning North Carolina sportswriter, UNC alum Sammy Batten retires


Sammy Batten is the rare journalist to catch a break during a pandemic that accelerated a talent drain because of layoffs. Batten took a buyout and retired Dec. 1 after 36 years as a sports writer, the last 31 of those at The Fayetteville Observer. While comparing his plight to those journalists and many others, the word “fortunate” came up several times. (SportsChannel 8)
