UNC basketball coach Dean Smith's Tar Heels, though a slight favorite in the championship game, had to play without center Tommy LaGarde, who had blown out his knee earlier in the season. "Walter Davis had played with a broken finger. Phil Ford couldn't shoot from outside with his bad elbow," said Smith, who was coaching in his fifth Final Four.
