Art’s Angle: The ‘Real’ Roy

Needing spending money at UNC, Roy Williams officiated intramural games. In grad school, he made $5 a day chasing balls at soccer practices, then reffing scrimmages for Dean Smith after taking notes on his legal pad. Smith hired Williams as a part-time assistant in 1978 because he knew Roy wanted to be a coach and thought he'd be a great one.
