Michael Jordan’s announcement in September 2001 that he’d be returning to the NBA came as no surprise. There’d been the noticeable slimming down, the rumor and nondenial, the pickup games arranged with once and current NBAers. More telling than anything, there’d been the acknowledged itch. “Nothin’ compares to bein’ it,” Jordan said.
