Activist: Smith walks softly, carries big social conscience

Dean Smith has always taken strong stands for social justice, since his first years at Chapel Hill when he and others dined out with black friends to make sure the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was obeyed. In the years since, he's spoken out for gun control, for gay rights and for a nuclear freeze. He's spoken out against war. And he's continued that activism since his retirement.
