Among those coached by basketball's inventor, Dr. James Naismith, who famously tacked up those peach baskets at the Springfield YMCA, was an irascible youngster named Forrest Allen, who would go by the nickname “Phog.” Phog Allen would later take over the Kansas Jayhawks and coach a young man from southeast Kansas named Dean Smith.
