UNC built a 17-3 lead midway through the third quarter, but mental miscues and turnovers provided Virginia Tech with enough opportunities in the final 20 minutes to steal a 20-17 victory with T.J. Yates sidelined late with an ankle injury. “It’s very disappointing to lose a game like this,” UNC head coach Butch Davis said. “We played so well for the first 30 minutes of the game, and played so poorly the second 30 minutes.”
