The ACC has reached septuagenarian status. Let’s look at its five-year birthdays since it was founded for the 1953-54 college season. Before the ACC’s fifth season, 1958-59, Frank McGuire hired little-known assistant Dean Smith, who would succeed him three years later. In 1964, Smith had his last non-winning record (12-12) of his famed 36-year tenure.
