John Thompson, the first Black coach to win an NCAA title: He paved it so we had a better chance


40 years ago, John Thompson became the first Black coach to win the NCAA Championship. It was an occasion that changed college basketball for the better, in the way that Cincinnati and Loyola advanced the sport by winning the tournament with Black lineups in the 1960s, and UTEP did in 1966 by claiming the title with an all-Black starting five.
